My Guardian Angel

by, Carol S. Batey

The ringing of the telephone pieced my dreams in the predawn hours on that quiet December morning.
My husband Joe, a railroader for twenty years then was working the night shift. I reached for the phone on the nightstand and heard my husband’s co-worker Ron. The veil of sleep I struggled against lifted instantly. A call at that late hour meant something had happened to Joe.
“Carol,” Ron said gently, “Joe has been hurt on the rails. He ‘s been taken to Vanderbilt Trauma Hospital.”
Hurt on the rails! I felt as if my heart had stopped. “Can he walk?” a voice inside led me to ask.
“No, “he said, but he’ll be all right.”
I rose out of bed in a daze. I knew Joe was seriously injured if he was taken to Vanderbilt. Tears came to my eyes and God’s calm and holy voice spoke to my heart, saying, “Open yourself and receive comfort and strength. Be preparing for what is coming next. Just be still.”

In that moment, I felt a sense of spiritual revelation. I perceived that whatever else was going on, my life would be completely shadowed by this misfortune. I sensed that the harmony and balance I had struggled to achieve in my life would be strained to the limits.
For reasons yet unknown, I believed that God had allowed this to take place. The so called accident happened –it wasn’t stopped. But Joe was divinely protected by his angels. I had no idea then of the critical nature of Joe’s accident, the profound effect it would have and just how much it would change our lives.
Joe had lost his left leg and crushed his right foot. He was traveling through a train crossover board while working and lost his footing. He started to fall forward and remembered what he had learned in safety school. He fell backward. At that time his left leg was completely severed, and his right foot was pinned underneath the train wheel.
What is perceived as a trail of tears is often a blessing in disguise.
Then reality set in. Joe had taken the van to work as I had no transportation. And what would I say to our six children? It was 5:20 a.m. the week before Christmas. The prospect of waking them up and telling them the news was frightening. I didn’t think I had the strength to cope. As I walked to their bedrooms with reluctant steps. Prayers came to my heart and then my lips. Through the grace of god, I stayed calm and told them the simple truth - their day had been badly hurt. I comforted them and we cried together. Once they realized that he was alive and would be alright, they were less worried.
There is healing power in tears. The circle and bond of devotion that symbolizes family was expressed and strengthened by our shedding tears together. The healing was beginning.
I called a neighbor to watch the children and as I left the house my godmother, I felt a strong sense of peace—the loving Spirit of god hovering around me.
We prayed all the way to the hospital and were greeted at the emergency room where we learned he was being cared for. But when the lady behind the desk said, “Honey, I believe he got bumped by a train, “I knew he was badly hurt.

The demons of fear, depression, self-pity and doubt assaulted my senses, threatening to consume me. My faith and trust in God were almost overshadowed by the reality of what was going on. I kept quiet.
I nervously entered the room. To my utter amazement, Joe was alert and able to talk. His face had a beautiful glow that was reassuring and gave me the sense that all would be well.
The doctor explained that he needed four separate surgeries, the first within an hour. I listened, horrified, sick to my stomach but trying to mask my emotions. Joe was calm, spiritual prepared and ready.
Amazingly, when he came out he had that same glow. He didn’t need ICU, as the doctors thought he would. We thanked God that the first hurdle had been crossed –our prayers answered.
In the next two weeks, the outpouring of love from near and far was extraordinary. We received cards, gifts, food and checks from friends and strangers from all over America. Churches prayed for us and people we’d lost touch with were suddenly found.

We spent Christmas in the hospital but out faith in God had been dramatically restored. And when I heard Joe tell the story, I understood why he had such a glow,
Upon realizing his leg was severed at the railway yard, Joe said a heavenly voice had spoken to him saying, “Joe, don’t worry. Everything will be all right.”
He said it was a misty morning but it was clear as daylight. Although feeling excruciating pain in his crushed right foot, a spirit of peace came over him too. This eased his fears and worries. The voice then commanded him to remove his severed left leg from the tracks and push his body back, or the moving train would hit him in the head.
With a damage left leg and right foot, and his severed left in his lap, he obeyed the voice. The voice told him to remove his radio belt and make a tourniquet for his left leg. Joe obeyed. Finally, the voice directed him to call on his radio for help the voice also said Ron was the closes to him. Ron was nearby and heard Joe’s distress signal. Ron called 911, unaware that Joe was divinely protected. Then Joe asked another railroader to go up the hill and wait for the ambulance.
Despite the adjustments to our life, God’s blessings continue to flow abundantly. His co-workers built a handicap ramp at our home, another painted our home. The union brought us food for months and the railroad provided in-home care with a nurse.
The accident, indeed, has taught us how God sends angels to protect and guide our every step. We must be obedient to the still, small voice that speaks inside us.
